Upon encountering the word "stratagem" some assume it's contrived. (After all, "strategery" was a malapropism made famous by Saturday Night Live.) But not only is stratagem a legitimate word (derived from Middle English and Old French), it was specifically coined to refer to strategies that 'outwit' others; that gain the upper hand in whatever battlefield one is engaged.
